Unleash Your Vision

I used to think making a vision board was stupid. I mean how can a poster of random pictures hung on your wall help you accomplish your dreams?

Well, I’m going to be very honest with you… in some strange, mysterious way it did.

Here’s the thing, when we have dreams or goals for ourselves often times we keep them contained. They are locked in our brain too afraid to come out, and instead of setting ourselves up to succeed we actually are doing the opposite.

Numerous studies have shown we actually retain more information by taking notes down by hand. Well I’m going to make a bet that this holds true when it comes to our dreams and goals too.

If we take the time to write our dreams down instead of mentally remembering them, well maybe they might come true! Take it one step further and let’s visualize them through pictures… well now I think we are on to something.

Last year I sat down and said, “You know what? I’m going to make a dream board”, and never in my wildest dreams did I think it would do anything other than collect dust in my room.

But GUESS WHAT?

I started to look at that board everyday when I woke up. I stared at it as I brushed my teeth, looked at it with my peripheral vision as I sat in bed watching Netflix, and slowly without even knowing it I was making these dreams happen (even in small ways) because I put them out into the world rather than locked in my brain tucked away. Having a constant visual reminded me of what I wanted to accomplish even when I wasn’t thinking about it.

For example:

Wanting to feel more confident and continue my health journey, turned into running my first 5K ( I have grown to really enjoy running)!

Wanting to go to bed earlier and get more sleep, turned into becoming a morning person and working out at 5:30AM (CRAZY, I KNOW)!

Wanting to travel and see the world, turned into going after a job, getting said job, and packing my bags to work in Europe.

Taking the time to write down my goals and artistically transform them into something to be proud of, is why I am HOOKED! I now make a promise to myself to take the time to create a dream board every year.

So are you ready to begin?

How do we create a dream board you ask? Well let’s get started!!

First grab your supplies:

  • A pair of scissors
  • A notebook or journal
  • Poster paper
  • Magazines you don’t mind cutting
  • Glue
  • Colored pencils or markers

Before you get started, create a space for yourself where you can focus. Maybe light a candle or diffuse your favorite essential oils and go ahead, put some music on that makes you happy.

Now you are ready!

With whatever notebook or journal you have I want you to write down a list of dreams you have for yourself. This step is important because it helps us get organized as to the visuals we want on our board, and also it might be the first time you have ever written down these dreams on paper. If so, WAHOO, I’m so excited for you!

Then, grab your scissors and magazines. Go ahead and flip through a magazine. If you come across a picture or word that speaks to you, cut it out. Don’t worry if your cutting is horrible, it will get covered up in the end!

After you have gathered enough pictures to fill your poster paper and represent the list of dreams you wrote for yourself, lay out the pictures on your poster paper.

There is no right way to do it, whatever makes sense for you.

Once you like your layout, it’s time to glue those pictures down. If you don’t like a placement of a picture, no worries, just fix it before the glue dries.

Last but not least decorate it up with your own personal touch. It could be little doodles or words, whatever you need to see to make it pop for you!

And that’s it!

Now you have an amazing visual to remind yourself of your dreams!

Just make sure to put it in a location that you will see on the daily.

I can’t wait to see how your board came out! Feel free to send me a picture, or tag me on instagram @smilewithjenna.

Share your dreams for the world to see, and maybe your dream that seemed so far fetched, is closer than you think!
